Western and Windsor renew their rivalry this Friday night

11/9/2017 5:43:00 PM

The Western Mustangs will end their three-game home stand with a matchup against the Windsor Lancers in Alumni Hall before heading back out on the road for a four-game road trip. The Mustangs will hope to carry the momentum from a huge upset victory over the Ryerson Rams this past weekend into their game against the Lancers.

The purple and white have gone 2-2 over their first four games to begin their season, most recently splitting a pair of games against the Toronto Varsity Blues and the No. 10 Ryerson Rams.

In their first game of the weekend, the Mustangs lost to the Varsity Blues, despite a late-game comeback. Shooting struggles continued to be a problem for the purple and white, as they were unable to convert on open opportunities. Western continued to battle throughout the opening half, but the Blues continued to build on their lead with a 16-2 run to end the first half, leaving the Mustangs to play catch-up in the second half. Eriq Jenkins would spark a fourth-quarter run to cut into the lead, but it was ultimately not enough as the Mustangs fell 66-53.

Western looked like a completely different team heading into their matchup the following night against the Rams. The Mustangs connected from beyond the arc right from the opening tip, finishing the first quarter shooting 6-11 from deep. However, Western would hit a dry-spell early in the third quarter and allow Ryerson to take a slim lead heading into the fourth. The game remained back and forth throughout the fourth until Mustangs' guard Omar Shiddo would put the game away with six straight points, leading to the slim 62-59 win for the purple and white.

Western vs. Windsor – Friday, November 10 at 8:00 p.m.

The Lancers will head into Friday's game with a 2-1 record early in the season, following a recent loss to Ryerson and win over Toronto. Windsor currently sits in second place in the OUA West division, with just half a game advantage above the Mustangs, giving Western the ability to move up the standings with a win this Friday.

Windsor will come into their matchup against the purple and white as one of the premier shooting teams from beyond the arc. Despite not being quite as deadly from deep as last year, Windsor remains as a top-five team in both three-pointers attempted and three-point percentage, while being number one in the country in three-pointers made, connecting on an incredibly 13 per game. Western has held opponents to 28.3 percent from beyond the arc this season, proving their ability to defend the perimeter, while only allowing 67.5 PPG, but will have to improve even further on that end of the floor if they hope to slow down the Lancer offence.

Windsor will once again be led by guard Mike Rocca, who led the team in scoring last season with 16.8 PPG and has improved his point production this season, scoring 22.7 PPG along with 9.7 RPG and 5 APG, doing it all for the Lancers early in the year. Fellow guard Lucas Orlita has helped Rocca with the scoring load for Windsor, chipping in 14.7 PPG.
