ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Second-year striker Braeden Gee netted the team's lone goal of the day in the Western Mustangs' 3-1 loss to the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon in St. Catharines.
The loss is the Mustangs first of the season and moves the team to 5-1-2 on the year, with the team occupying fourth in the OUA West standings. The Badgers' win will improve their record to 3-4-1 on the season and move into fifth, narrowly trailing Western.
In a high intensity-game marked by Western trying to hold their undefeated record and Brock hoping to climb up the standings, 11 yellow cards were ultimately handed out throughout the match. The Western offence was slow to get going in the first half, as Brock held the purple and white to only two shot opportunities in the first 45 minutes of play. However, Gee would put the Mustangs on the board early with his goal, soon to be matched just minutes later by Brock's Liam Wilson as both teams went into halftime with one goal apiece.
The second half was another story for Western in terms of scoring, as the Mustangs found themselves with 11 shots in the final 45 minutes, but none found the back of the net. After the game drew on, the intensity heightened as cards began to be handed out more frequently, the biggest impact of which being for Western, who lost third-year goaltender Kody Thompson after a red card early in the second half. Brock capitalized on the ensuing penalty kick and added one more before the final buzzer, as Brock walked away with a 3-1 win.
The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, September 24, when they travel to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders. The game is set to begin at 3:15 p.m.
