Box Score WATERLOO, ONT. - First-year striker Sebastian Fischer netted his third goal of the season to help lift the Western men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon in Waterloo, Ont.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to a 6-3-3 record on the season as they move into third place in the OUA West division standings. The Golden Hawks' loss drops their record to 1-9-3 on the season, placing them eighth in the OUA West division.
Fischer was not the only Mustang to find the back of the net in the win, as Christian Devia scored Western's second and final goal of the match to regain the Mustang lead and earn the victory.
The opening half proved to be closely contested, as neither side found a way to break through the opposing defence. The shot attempts for both sides were few and far between throughout the opening 45 minutes of action while Western went into the half facing a 0-0 tie.
However, Fischer's goal would give Western their initial lead just seconds into the second half, scoring a spectacular shot to give the Mustangs the 1-0 advantage. The offence was quickly ignited by both teams, allowing the Golden Hawks to answer midway through the half to once again even the game, but Devia's goal in extra time would allow the purple and white to escape with the 2-1 victory.
The Mustangs will be back in action this Friday, October 12, where they will take on the Windsor Lancers in their first meeting of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:15 P.M. EST.
