Toronto, ON – The Mustangs rode a 3 goal first period to a 6-4 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night in Toronto.
The Varsity Blues opened the scoring on the game just 2:52 into the 1
st period off the stick of Hunter Atchison, his 2
nd goal of the season.
Then the Mustangs responded with a trio of goals starting with Spenser Cobbold, he netted a powerplay goal at 5:25 of the 1st with assists going to Trevor Warnaar & Jonathan Laser.
Western would finish out the period with goals from Anthony Stefano at 9:09 & Ray Huether at 16:55.
The Mustangs held a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.
The purple and white would come out of the gate strong in the 2
nd period, just 35 seconds into the period Theo Lewis extended the Western lead to 4-1.
Toronto would respond around the mid-way point of the period, first on a powerplay goal from David Thompson at 10:46 and then just under 2 minutes later Max Lindsay scored his 3
rd of the season to cut the Western lead to 4-3.
The Mustangs responded quickly though when Kenny Huether got his 1
st of the year with assists going to Cobbold & Ryan Bechtel to make it a 5-3 Western lead through 2 periods.
Western would add to that lead in the 3
rd period with a Matt Watson goal, assists to Waraar & Ethan Syzpula to make it a 6-3 game.
The Varsity Blues would try to put on a late push when Max Lindsay netted his 4
th of the season with a goal at 19:36 to make it 6-4 but it was too little too late.
Luke Peresinni would make 19 saves in the win.
With the win the Mustangs move to 5-6-1-1 on the season.
Western is back in action tomorrow night when they will host Brock at Thompson Arena, puck-drop is 7pm.
