Mustangs fall to Blues in their first meeting this season

TORONTO, Ont. - A huge second quarter allowed for the Toronto Varsity Blues to cruise to an easy 56-82 win over the Western Mustangs.

The loss updates Western's record to 1-7 on the year as they fall to last place in the OUA West. Toronto improves to 2-6 on the season, and continue to hold their place in 7th in the OUA East.

Despite the struggles of the team, Laura Graham remains unfazed and continues to be an offensive threat to every team Western faces, putting up 22 points to lead both teams alongside 6 assists. Debora Kamba also had an impressive individual performance, recording a game-high 10 rebounds while displaying her defensive capabilities with 3 blocks and 2 steals.

The Mustangs began the game with an aggressive offence, slashing through Toronto's defence and establishing a presence in the paint. Although this allowed for some easy buckets, the Blues quickly tightened their zone alongside an 8-0 to flip the momentum in their favour. Western struggled to keep up, and fell behind 10-17 at the end of the first.

Graham continued to prove herself as an effective scoring option, accounting for a third of Western's points in the quarter, but unfortunately this wasn't enough as the gap Toronto made only grew as the game continued as players began feeling more comfortable in their home court. The Blues began dominating every aspect of the ball game, and with several runs throughout the quarter cemented themselves with a huge lead. As the Mustangs struggled to break through the opposing defence, they only fell further and trailed 48-25 at half-time.

This remained the theme for the second half - Toronto shutting down any attempts Western made to spur a comeback. As the buzzer sounded, the gap in the second quarter proved to be too large to close, the Mustangs losing 56-82.

The Mustangs will be back in action this Saturday, November 24, where they face off against the Ryerson Rams for their first meeting of the season. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch the action live on OUA.tv.
