Mustangs head into final week of regular season action

2/13/2018 5:38:00 PM

The Mustangs will be back in Alumni Hall for their final home game of the regular season against the Brock Badgers before returning to the road for their final game against the Guelph Gryphons in Guelph, Ont.

After edging out the Golden Hawks with a nine-point victory, the Mustangs travelled to Hamilton to take on the Marauders and fell in a 94-82 loss as McMaster swept the season series against the purple and white.

Despite the loss, Western has officially locked up second place in the OUA West division with a 14-8 record so far on the season, as they earn a bye through the first round of the postseason.

A consistent second quarter from the purple and white allowed the Mustangs to enter halftime with a strong lead, as Western shot a respectable 54 percent from the field and knocking down five threes in the half. However, Laurier stormed back behind 21 points from Kemel Archer, forcing clutch fourth quarter performances from Henry Tan and Omar Shiddo to help push Western to the 93-84 victory.

The Mustangs didn't find the same success the following night against a McMaster team which seems to have Western's number. The Marauders controlled nearly the entire game from the opening tip, as McMaster knocked down 10 threes on the night while shooting 50 percent from the field in the game.

Marko Kovac would lead the Mustangs' comeback late in the fourth to get the purple and white within reach, but it would ultimately prove to not be enough as the Mustangs fell 94-82 to end the road trip.

Western vs. Brock – Wednesday, February 14 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

Western may hold second place in the OUA West division, but they'll be going up against the team which has controlled the division all season in Brock.

The Badgers faced off against the purple and white in their first game of the season and looked dominant against the Mustangs throughout the night.

Western shot an abysmal 28.4 percent from the field in the game, as they struggled to find any momentum against the Brock defence. On the other side of the ball, Brock's Cassidy Ryan couldn't be stopped, scoring a game-high 22 points to help lead the team to an 83-58 victory.

Brock currently holds a 20-2 record so far this season, sitting atop the divisions standings, as the team has proven to be dominant on both sides of the ball to this point in the year.

The Badgers' offence has been incredibly efficient this season, sitting eighth in both points per game with 86 per game and field goal percentage, shooting 44.9 percent from the field.
However, as dependable as the offence has been, the defence has been even more dependable for the Badgers this year. Brock currently sits third in blocks per game, ninth in steals, fourth in points per game allowed, and second in opponent's field goal percentage, a big reason for Western's loss earlier this season.

Brock will be led by Dani Elgadi and Cassidy Ryan, who are averaging 17.7 and 17.5 points per game, respectively. Ryan, who torched the purple and white in their previous meeting last season, is shooting a solid 44.5 percent from the field this year while adding 4.7 rebounds per game.

Elgadi, who controls the paint for the Badgers, currently leads the team in both points and rebounds, averaging 9.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game on an incredible 51.1 percent shooting from the field, doing it all for Brock.

Western at Guelph – Saturday, February 17 at 3:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

The following Saturday should prove to be an easier test for the purple and white as they go up against the Guelph Gryphons for the second and final time this season.

It was a blowout victory for Western the last time these two teams met, as Eriq Jenkins put up a team-high 22 points in the victory. The Gryphons stayed in the game throughout the first quarter, but a lockdown defensive performance from the Mustangs for the rest of the game along with a balanced scoring effort allowed Western to walk away with the 99-80 victory.

The Gryphons currently hold a 5-17 record on the season as they sit eighth in the OUA West division, outside of the playoff picture.

Guelph has been around the middle of the pack in terms of shooting the basketball this season, but a severe lack of ball movement has hindered any sort of offensive consistency this season, averaging just 11.7 assists per game and 14.2 turnovers per game to hold one of the worst assist-turnover ratios in the country.

Western, who has shown the ability to catch fire from beyond the arc, will be looking to take advantage of a Guelph offence which has had trouble slowing down shooters all season long.

Guelph will be led by veteran Daniel Dooley. Dooley is averaging 12.5 points per game on 46.5 percent shooting. Dooley, who has been a source of consistency for a struggling Guelph offence, has chipped in 2.7 rebounds per game as well as leading the team with 3 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
