Mustangs to host Lancers this Saturday in an OUA Quarter-final matchup

2/22/2018 2:12:00 PM

The Mustangs ended the regular season with a 15-9 record to sit second in the OUA West, allowing them a first round playoff bye. This week will see them take on the third ranked Windsor Lancers at Alumni Hall in a quarter-final matchup.

Throughout the season, Omar Shiddo and Marko Kovac have led the Mustangs offensively. Shiddo averages 14.6 points per game, while Kovac is right behind with 14.5. In terms of rebounds, Chris Clegg is the most dominating offensive force on the purple and white roster, averaging 2.1 per game.

However, when Western met the Lancers in regular season action, both games saw Henry Tan rack up the highest number of points. He scored 36 points between the two games, while Shiddo was the second highest scoring Mustang both times.

Western, despite having a comparatively low field goal percentage in comparison with the rest of the OUA (41.4%), has stayed competitive throughout the season by being the best in the province at forcing turnovers.

The Mustangs average 11.7 steals per game, an effort led by Eriq Jenkins and Nikola Farkic, while typically limiting their opponents to only seven.

Defensively speaking, Kovac again leads the roster. His 4.3 rebounds per game are a team high, followed by Jenkins' 3.7 average.

A 101-89 victory over the Waterloo Warriors moved Windsor through the initial round of playoffs, and into this weekend's quarter-final against the Mustangs. The Lancers finished the regular season with a 13-11 record to sit third in the OUA West.

This week will see them travel up the 401 and visit Alumni Hall for their third game of the season against the Mustangs.

Both of the regular season contests went in favour of the Mustangs (93-78, 94-86) after Western broke out in the second half of the game. Ball control was a major hurdle for the Lancers, with the Mustangs forcing 29 Lancer turnovers over two games.

Mike Rocca led the effort in the February 3 matchup with 21 points, after being limited to 15 in November's game. Rocca has led the Lancers offence all year long, finishing the regular season with an average of 18 points per game over 24 games.

A solid amount of those points were earned outside the arc, as Rocca has netted one of the highest three-point totals in the OUA (64). That being said, his accuracy is lower than one would expect for someone who has racked up so many points – connecting sitting 35th overall in the league.
