The Mustangs will be back on the road for a meeting with the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo this Wednesday evening before travelling to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders on Saturday afternoon.
After earning a win over the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night in Alumni Hall and a road win over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday evening, the Mustangs will be looking to continue their momentum with meetings against the Laurier Golden Hawks this Wednesday and the McMaster Marauders this Saturday on the road.
The Mustangs will head into the weekend with a 13-7 record, which is good for second in the OUA West.
Despite Waterloo's disappointing record this season, it was a back and forth affair against Western on Wednesday night in Alumni Hall.
Western went on a dominant second-quarter offensive run, but a strong third quarter would get Waterloo back in the game behind the efforts of Waterloo's Nedim Hodzic, who put up a game-high 33 points on the night. However, a pair of 29-point performances from
Marko Kovac and
Omar Shiddo would ultimately push the Mustangs to the eventual 97-84 victory.
The following Saturday was equally contested and even more competitive between two division-rivals in Western and Windsor.
Neither side gained a clear advantage through the first half until a late second-quarter run would give the Mustangs the slight edge necessary to pull away by a small margin in the second half.
Windsor point guard Mike Rocca had a huge 21-point nine-rebound performance coupled with spectacular defence, but a 17-point performance from Kovac against his former team would help lift the Mustangs to their fourth straight victory.
Western at Laurier – Wednesday, February 7 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv
The Mustangs will be taking on a Golden Hawks team which has been competitive all season long, as Western escaped with a slim 78-76 home-victory the last time these two teams met in early January.
Western found themselves facing a deficit heading into halftime against a scrappy Golden Hawks defence, as the purple and white went just 2-10 from beyond the arc in the first half.
The second half was highlighted by an incredible fourth-quarter performance from Laurier's Tevaun Kokko, but his heroics would ultimately be spoiled by a game-winning tip-in from
Jedson Tavernier, giving the purple and white the buzzer-beating victory.
Laurier, who currently holds a 9-11 record on the season, sits in fourth place in the OUA West division and will look to secure their playoff positioning with a victory over the purple and white.
The Golden Hawks have been relatively average in terms of scoring this season, putting up a respectable 78.5 points per game on 14.2 assists per game.
The defence has also proved to be pedestrian but fairly reliable for Laurier this season, allowing 77 points per game as they cling to a slim +1.5-point differential for the season.
The Golden Hawks will likely be led by Kokko, who absolutely torched the purple and white in the second half of their previous meeting, scoring 22 points in the game and averaging 20.3 points per game on the season. Kokko has distributed the ball relatively well for Laurier this season as well, leading the team with 3.4 assists and adding 1.8 steals per game, performing on both ends of the floor.
Western at McMaster– Saturday, February 10 at 3:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv
Despite McMaster's disappointing record this season, the Marauders ran the Mustangs out of Alumni Hall in their previous meeting in late January.
The Mustangs started the game relatively well, if not a bit sloppy on the offensive end, but the Marauders simply outran, outhustled, and outplayed the more talented Western team in the second half.
McMaster outscored the purple and white 30-15 in the third quarter and forced the Mustangs to shoot 3-15 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Shiddo played well throughout the night, leading the team with 21 points, but he would prove to be the lone bright spot for the team as McMaster walked away with a 90-76 victory.
In terms of the season as a whole, it hasn't always been pretty for the Marauders as they near the end of regular season action.
The Marauders play at an incredibly fast pace, which ran the Mustangs out of the gym in their previous game.
However, for the most part, the quick pace hasn't worked out in the Marauders' favour, as the team shoots just 37.2 percent from the field, ranking second worst in the country on a high volume of shots.
The defence has been middling at best for McMaster this season, allowing 83.7 points per game while allowing teams to score with team from both the perimeter and the paint with relative ease. Western will no doubt be looking to avenge their previous loss to the Marauders with a statement game heading towards the playoffs.
The Marauders will be led by fellow guards Miles Seward and David McCulloch.
Seward is currently leading the team in points per game, averaging an impressive 20.1 points per game on an efficient 37.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc to go along with 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game for McMaster.
McCulloch isn't far behind in terms of scoring for the Marauders, averaging 18.9 points per game to go along with 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
