HAMILTON, Ont. - Fifth-year striker Julia Crnjac helped lead Western women's soccer team to their third straight victory with a win over the McMaster Marauders on Friday evening in Hamilton, Ont.
With the win, the Mustangs improve 5-0-3, maintaining their undefeated record while they sit in second place in the OUA West division standings. McMaster's loss puts them in fifth place in the OUA West division with a 2-3-3 record on the season.
Crnjac's goal marked her fourth of the season, tying her with Giulia Geraci for the most on the roster. Crnjac was not the only Mustang to find the back of the net for the purple and white, as second-year striker Morgan Asling netted Western's first goal of the match.
Despite the eventual win, it was the Marauders who found their way onto the scoreboard initially, as McMaster's Stephanie Roberts scored midway through the first half to give the Marauders the early advantage. However, the Mustangs' defence, which has been stellar all season long, quickly regained their form in the second half to withhold any more goals from the McMaster strikers.
Asling would tie the game up at 1-1 apiece early into the second half, while the Mustangs continued to pressure the Marauders with relentless energy. That effort would soon pay off for the purple and white, as Crnjac once again proved herself dependable, scoring the game-winning goal just minutes later, as Western went off to pull out the competitive 2-1 victory.
The Mustangs will be back in action this Sunday, September 23, where they will travel to St. Catharines to take on the Brock Badgers in what will be their second meeting of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 P.M. EST.
