Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Mustangs shutout Ryerson in first game of 2019

The Mustangs kicked off the 2019 portion of their schedule with convincing 3-0 shutout of the Ryerson Rams.

Western opened the scoring mid-way through the 1st period. Emma Suitor re-directed a point shot from Edie Levesque past Rams goaltender Fanny Vigeant to make it 1-0 Mustangs.

At the 12:55 mark of the 2nd period April Clark deked through the defence and slid home a backhand to extend the Western lead to 2-0. The goal extends Clark's lead atop the OUA goal scoring leaders list to 12 on the season and brings her into a tie in U Sports.

"We're one of the later teams coming back so we really had to work hard this week to prepare" Clark commented after the game. "It's a good achievement (goals leader) but I owe it all to my teammates, I couldn't do it without them."

With just 17 seconds left in the 2nd period Shailyn Waites tapped home a loose puck in the crease, it was her 2nd goal of the season to make it 3-0 Mustangs. The lone assist went to Anthea Lasis.

"With our first game coming back after the break and only having a couple practices under our belt, the girls battled and they showed up tonight" said Mustangs Head Coach Candice Moxley "It's going to be about refining things as we move forward but our powerplay responded tonight too so it was really exciting to see those things happen for us".

Western goaltender Carmen Lasis stopped all 19 shots she faced in the 3-0 shutout. "Carmen saw a lot of shots from the outside tonight which played into our game plan, our d zone was a bit shaky but only having a couple practices in it was still pretty strong." Moxley said post game.

The Mustangs move to 8-2-0-3 on the season with the win while the Rams drop to 7-3-0-3.

Western returns to action Sunday afternoon against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

"I think it doesn't allow them time to think, so it's a matter of just recovering and getting their legs ready to go (for tomorrow), we played a strong game tonight so it all about improving on those things and showing up tomorrow" said Moxley.

Puck drop is at 2:30pm at Thompson arena, watch all the action on OUA.tv.
