MBB vs. McMaster

Playoff seeding on the line as Mustangs head into Senior Night

2/12/2019 2:42:00 PM

LONDON, Ont. - Following a pair of impressive wins over the Brock Badgers and Windsor Lancers this past weekend, the Mustangs will be back on the road to take on the Waterloo Warriors before returning home for a meeting with the McMaster Marauders in what will be the final game of the regular season.

The weekend left Western boasting a 15-7 record with two games remaining on the schedule, as they sit in third in the OUA West division standings heading towards the playoffs.

Although they would ultimately leave St. Catharine's with a victory, Saturday's game proved to be a true test for the purple and white against one of the OUA West's most formidable teams. The Badgers, who hold a narrow lead over the Mustangs in the OUA West division standings with an identical 15-7 record, nearly stole the game away with a fourth-quarter comeback on Saturday before Western's eventual overtime victory.

It was Omar Shiddo who gave the Mustangs the extra spark down the stretch, as he once again put together an incredible performance to lead the way for the purple and white. Shiddo's 33-point output on Saturday was nearly topped by his 29 points the following afternoon in a 102-63 blowout over Windsor.

The two wins proved to be even more impressive for the Mustangs given a game rescheduling which forced the Mustangs to follow up a road trip with a home game the next day in a rare back-to-back situation.

However, the Mustangs won't have time to rest on their laurels, as they look ahead to the potential of winning four games in eight days, beginning with a meeting against a Warriors team on the outside of the playoff picture.

With a disappointing 3-19 record this season, Waterloo currently sits at the bottom of the OUA West standings, but, as Shiddo remarked after the team's win over Windsor on Sunday, the Warriors' record could indeed make them more of a threat at this point of the season.

"They have nothing to lose, so they're going to come out relaxed against us and sometimes that helps a team play above their potential," said Shiddo. "We're fighting for a first-round bye right now. We need these final two wins and Waterloo knows that, so they're going to be fired up knowing they can impact the playoff seeding."

But despite the low-pressure stakes for Waterloo, if the Mustangs are able to pick apart the Warriors' defence like they did earlier this season, Western could very well find themselves in the driver's seat heading into the postseason. Six Mustangs scored in double figures for the purple and white in the team's 95-81 win over the Warriors, as Western  caught fire from deep to close out the game.

However, Western will be facing a far hungrier team this Saturday on Senior Night in Alumni Hall, as McMaster will be entering the game with their playoff hopes on the line. The Marauders currently hold a 10-12 record on the season and fifth place in the OUA West standings, but in such a tightly contested division, the meeting could very well prove to be a must-win for a McMaster team hoping to make some noise in the playoffs.

Despite their varying records, Western just barely escaped with a 88-85 victory in its first meeting against McMaster earlier this month, where Shiddo sealed the game with three-straight free throws in the clutch to fend off the Marauders. But if Western hopes to enter the playoffs on a high note, they'll have to win the hustle plays against a desperate McMaster team. In their previous meeting, the Marauders controlled the boards and were the first to every loose ball, a difference in effort that'll have to shift in order for the Mustangs to end Senior Night with a win.

But this week's games won't simply be about momentum for the Mustangs, as an improved playoff seeding is on the line. If Western is able to win both their games this week, they'll overtake Brock for the second seed in the OUA West and earn themselves a first-round bye. If Laurier loses both their games this week as well, which is unlikely, then Western will find themselves heading into the playoffs with the first seed in the division.

Clearly, with playoff positioning on the line, this week will be a high-stakes affair for the purple and white as they look to enter the playoffs on a potential five-game winning streak.

Both games are scheduled to tip off at 8:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
