GUELPH, Ont. – The Western Mustangs lost their second game of the OUA regular season 44-27 to the Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon on Varsity Field.
The game was off to an early start when Guelph's Max Goodwin scored a try two minutes in, soon followed by a second from Cameron Hurst. The Mustangs landed themselves on the scoreboard shortly thereafter with two penalty kicks, bringing it to a 14-6 lead for Guelph, only several minutes before scoring their first try of the game. With 20 minutes left in the first half, the Mustangs were successful with the convert, shrinking the gap to a mere 14-13.
By halftime, the Gryphons led the Mustangs 28-13 featuring tries from Goodwin, Hurst, Talbot, and Keshoofy.
The second half of the game allowed the Gryphons to continue to climb the scoreboard, with Western scoring two more tries late in the game. Flyhalf Mikko Vorrster ensured all Mustang conversions were successful, bringing the final score to 44-27.
The loss will drop Western to 0-2, whereas the Gryphons' season record will rise to 2-0, leaving them tied for first place in the OUA standings with the Brock Badgers.
The Mustangs will be returning to the pitch on September 21
st against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 P.M EST on Mustang's Field.
