London, ON – The Mustangs won a tough 1-0 battle against the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon.
Both sides traded chances in the first half with Guelph having the shot advantage of 3-2 but no one was able to score in the first half.
"We knew we were going to have some space in the wide areas, I think we had moments in the first half where we had some success especially on the left side" said Mustangs Head Coach Martin Painter "Once we started moving the ball with some speed, I thought we were able to create some good situations."
In the 50
th minute the Mustangs opened the scoring. After a foul kick from Alyssa DeSantis into a crowd in front of the net Sabine Gillie-Hardy had an impeccable header which she then booted past the Guelph goaltender to take a 1-0 lead.
Western goaltender Megan Girardi had a hard-fought game. In the 72
nd minute she got tied up in a pile of players in front of the net off a corner kick, she appeared to have someone fall on her leg but was still able to make the save and the Mustangs defence kept the ball out.
"It was getting nerve wracking, but we scored that one goal and that's all it takes in this in these kinds of games" said Girardi "This was a huge game for us coming in as Guelph was tied with us in points so that's a big break getting this win."
The Mustangs are 5-0-1 with the win and are in 1
st place in the West division.
"Week to week there are no easy games. This is my eight-year coaching here and this is maybe the most competitive I've seen the division." said Painter
The Mustangs return to action at home next Saturday when they take on the Brock Badgers at Mustangs Field for a 1:00
pm start.
