Mustangs fall to McMaster in Three sets

London, ON - The Mustangs faced off against McMaster at home on Friday night. The Mustangs fought hard, but ended up losing the match 3-0.

Evan Cranshaw led the Mustangs in kills for the night with 9. Nathan Phelps led the Mustangs in digs with 6 while Jackson Bere led the Mustangs in blocks with 3.

The Western Mustangs lost the first set against McMaster 25-18. 

The Mustangs split the first two points of the second set leading to an early 1-1 tie. McMaster went on to take a 4-2 lead over the Mustangs. A kill from Jackson Bere regained the serve for the Mustangs with a score of 4-3. McMaster answered back and grew their lead to 7-3. The Mustangs struggled to close the gap as McMaster widened their lead to 10-5. A big double block from Ryan Scott and Gianfranco Sartor gave Western the serve with a score of 10-6. A kill from Gianfranco Sartor brought the score to 11-7 as Rhys Matheson was substituted in to serve. A kill from Gianfranco Sartor brought McMaster's lead to 9-12 and a double block from Jackson Bere and Josiah Esau shortened it further. A service ace from Gianfranco Sartor and a double block from Jackson Bere and Brady Fidler tied the set at 12. The set was tied again at 13 before McMaster retook a 16-14 lead. A double block from Evan Cranshaw and Ryan Scott tied the set at 17. Evan Cranshaw gave the Mustangs a 18-17 lead with a massive kill. After calling a timeout McMaster went on to tie the set at 18. A deep tip from Evan Cranshaw regained the lead for the Mustangs with a score of 19-18. The Mustangs extended their lead further with a kill from Gianfranco Sartor. McMaster went on to tie the set at 21 before retaking the lead with a score of 22-21. The set was tied at 22 before McMaster took a 23-22 lead late in the set. A kill from Brady Fidler tied the set at 23 before a kill from Jackson Bere tied it again at 24. McMaster went on to win the set 26-24. 

McMaster took an early 2-0 lead in the third set before a kill from Gianfranco Sartor earned the Mustangs their first serve of the set. A double block from Gianfranco Sartor and Ryan Scott tied the set at 2. A kill from Brady Fidler earned the Mustangs a 3-2 lead. McMaster retook a 7-4 lead in the set. The Mustangs regained the serve with a score of 8-5 after a kill from Jackson Bere. Another kill from Jackson Bere brought the score to 10-6 in favour of McMaster. McMaster charged ahead to a 15-8 lead before the Mustangs began to answer back. Kills from Evan Cranshaw and Gianfranco Sartor brought the score to 19-12. A kill from Brady Fidler allowed the Mustangs to continue to shorten McMaster's lead with a score of 19-14. The Mustangs continued to fight back as Blake Fenwick was substituted in to serve. He earned a service ace which helped the Mustangs shorten McMaster's lead to 22-19. McMaster went on to win the third set 25-19.

The Mustangs will face the Brock Badgers at Alumni Hall tomorrow night at 7:00pm. Be sure to wear your purple as you come out to cheer on the Mustangs as they play the final game of the regular season. Ensure you arrive a little early to help the Mustangs celebrate their graduating players.
