London, ON - As the 2019-20 women's basketball season wrapped up in Ottawa with the U SPORTS Top 8 tournament, the national governing body announced the complete list of the top 100 women's basketball players of the century.
Western's star of the early 90's Michele Vesprini was recognized for her impact on the game.
"I am still wrestling with the magnitude of this honour." said Vesprini "I can't see how i fit into it because of the sheer volume of women i have played with and against who were far better than i, but to be categorized as 'one of the best' is extremely humbling."
Vesprini was named OUA West Rookie of the Year in 1991-92 and also to the CIS All-Rookie Team that year.
"Michele is one of the most decorated athletes that has ever represented our program. The numbers she put up during her career prove that she is one of the best players that have ever played in USPORTS." said Mustangs Women's Basketball Head Coach Nate McKibbon "Her impact on our program goes far beyond the numbers. She continues to be an example of courage, perseverance and servitude. We are all extremely fortunate that she chose, and continues to be a Mustang."
Vesprini racked up multiple individual honours during her time as a Mustang including being named CIS First Team All-Canadian, OUA West Player of the Year, OUA All-Star in 93-94, 94-95 and 95-96.
"I hope i have been able to leave behind the philosophy of hard work paying off; that your teammates are family." said Vesprini "I think everyone hopes to inspire the next crew to never fear being great."
Even though it has been 15 years since her time on campus, Vesprini still feels a strong connection to campus and the women's basketball program.
"
Most of my closest friends are my teammates from Western or friends I made during my time at Western. A large group of alumni gather each year in the summer and we've been doing for about 20 years plus. I still feel like a Mustang".
