Mustangs Suffocate Lancers in Statement Home Win

LONDON, ON – The Western Mustangs hosted the Windsor Lancers for their final home game of the 2021 regular season and Western dominated the Lancers 54-4 and controlled majority of play throughout the game.

The game opened with repeating offside penalties called against the Mustangs which mitigated their offensive momentum early. These penalties could have proven costly had their defensive game not performed up to the gold standard.

Coach Greg Marshall said this post game "We have done a good job at not taking penalties this year, some were common sense, and some were unfortunate, but we can't beat the best teams if we take that many penalties."

Performing well defensively is an expectation for this now 3-1 Mustangs team but forcing the defense into binds throughout a tight game is surely not ideal.

A big reason for Windsor's trouble was Mustangs Linebacker Riley Macleod. Recovering a fumble which lead to a score and intercepting a pass showcased Macleod and the Mustangs defensive potential.

Macleod had this to say post game "We had the bye week before this so we had lots of time to prepare for this game, just working hard all week, got our rest in and I just filled my role."

Kicker Brian Garrity is an important cog in the Western offence, completing all 5 field goal attempts and converting all PAT kicks. Although kicking field goals in the red zone isn't always ideal, Garrity helped to spark the offense.

"When I have to send him out to kick field goals in the red zone, that's hard to do, we left points off the board," said Coach Marshall "but he was asked to kick some big field goals into the wind so that really helped us today."

Keon Edwards, yet again, was integral to this Mustangs win. Running the ball with confidence for 171 yards on the day. Running up the middle of the field proved to be the most effective route for Edwards as he slipped his way through the arms of Lancers all day on route to scoring a pair of touchdowns.

"Mentally, through the whole game we treated it like a playoff game, we came in just ready today." Edwards said post game.

This team ultimately won as a unit today, they overcame their mistakes early and kept their foot on the gas through rough patches of the game.

Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to Waterloo next weekend to take on the Warriors. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00pm and fans can watch the action on OUA.tv
