LONDON, ON – The day began in ceremonious fashion as it was announced that Western has renamed its iconic stadium to Western Alumni Stadium. Following a $1.4-million donation from the Western Alumni Association.
After the new name was revealed by President Alan Sheppard, the Mustangs and Laurier took to the newly named field, both in search of getting back in the win column after coming off a loss in week 2.
The Mustangs relied heavily on their defensive unit in the first half to push back against the Golden Hawk offense. Neither team grabbed a hold of the game in the first half with Laurier holding a 7-0 lead coming off 2 field goals and a rouge going into the 3
rd quarter.
"No big speech at half time, we all knew what we had to do and the little things figured themselves out." said Head Coach Greg Marshall "We blocked better, we ran better, and Evan (Hillock) came out at half and played exceptional."
After a slow first half, Western made the decision to give the ball to first year Quarterback Evan Hillock. Coming out of St. Thomas Moore High School in Hamilton, Hillock put his team on the board on his first offensive drive with a handoff to Keon Edwards who drove into the end zone.
"It's a great group of guys, they believed in me right when I got out there, I knew they had me, it made my job a lot easier, I just tried to lead the guys out there, lot of great guys out there." said Hillock "Special teams was good, O-Line played great, running backs – both Trey and Keon played great, receivers too, a whole team win out there."
Hillock faced his first adversity in the OUA with an interception on his second drive down the field. The team surrendered a touchdown on the ensuing drive, but Coach Marshall stuck with Hillock in the pocket. Laurier would not score again as the Mustangs would score 29 unanswered points.
"To have both of them on our squad is amazing. Some days its not your day, some quarter it's not your quarter, make your adjustments." said RB Trey Humes. "It doesn't matter who is on the sidelines or who is on the field we've got a team here."
Humes scored a pair of on the afternoon and dominated the Golden Hawk offensive line consistently moving the sticks for first down after first down.
"It's hard to go 4 quarters against our offense" said Humes "I don't care if Keon got 4 touchdowns today and I got none, at the end of the day we won as a team."
The Mustangs now go into the bye week with momentum and will be back on the field Oct. 16 as Windsor travels down the 401 to Western Alumni Stadium for a 1pm game. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 11
