Mustangs lose 1-0 to Gryphons at home

London, ON - The Mustangs returned home to face the Guelph Gryphons on a rainy Sunday afternoon, losing 1-0.

From the first whistle, Guelph began applying pressure and tested the Western back line. The first five minutes of the game saw the ball cross the Western goal line, but it was ultimately called back on an offside call.

Western remained stuck in their end for majority of the half but maintained a strong defensive effort to keep the score line at zero.

In the final minutes of the first half, a controversial call was made as Guelph was fouled in the box and a penalty kick was given. The Gryphons stepped up and slotted one into the bottom left corner to open the scoring.

"[It] was a really tough decision I still don't understand," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "I don't think anybody on the field knows what it was called for."

The whistle sounded for halftime, but the Western supporters delivered some energy under the rainy sky through the sound of chants and smashing pots.

The Mustangs had a few chances to start the half and won a few free kicks but ultimately couldn't capitalize on any of them.

Goalkeeper Samuel Spoelstra had a strong second half showing to keep the purple and white in the game and made an excellent save in the dying minutes as he went one on one with a Guelph player. Spoelstra also joined the offensive play for a final corner kick in Guelphs end looking to help even up the score, but nothing was made of it and the whistle blew giving the Mustangs their second loss of the season.

"It was a scrappy game. We did some things well defensively but struggled with the ball. Guelph is a well-organized team," said Painter. "At the end of the day, we didn't create enough."

"It's a really tough loss," added centre-back Brandon Miranjie. "At the end of the day we just need to finish our chances that we do get. We have been solid as a team, we've been working to get better each and every week, but it is just that end result we are trying to get."

The Mustangs have some time to recharge before returning to action October 13th against Laurier. The game will take place at Mustangs Field with kick-off at 8:15pm.
