Western clinch OUA West Division with decisive 66-0 win over Windsor

WINDSOR, ON – The Mustangs traveled down to Windsor to take on the Lancers to close out the regular season for both teams. Both teams had their sights set on the playoffs, if Windsor won, they would secure a spot, and if Western won, they clinch the division and home field advantage.

While the Mustangs offence played a key roll in their attack on the day, it was the defensive unit that initiated the scoring. Deionte Knight recovered a fumble off a sack during the Lancers second play of the game that opened the scoring early. The TD, as it turns out, was all it would have taken for Western to win the game, a 66-0 victory, in large part to Knight and the defensive team he is a part of.

"The strip sack was all (Zach) Lindley, he made that play happen by himself. We decided to be aggressive and (Paul) Gleason called a blitz and Lindley blasted the QB which took him out for the rest of the game, all I did that play was pass rush into the backfield and I was there for the ball which was hanging in the air for a long time, I caught the ball and ran into the end zone, at first I didn't even realize I had the ball it was just there."

The Mustangs employed their usual game plan of letting Keon Edwards and Trey Humes leg the ball up the field, which again proved effective. Humes ran for just 30 yards on the day but scored three touchdowns.

Having the backfield solidified as weapons all it takes is a serious throwing threat in the pocket, which quarterback Evan Hillock showed in spades today.

Hillock had a breakout performance in this game. His decision making was efficient and his throws were accurate. This type of passing ability is going to continue to spread out defensive alignments, which only gives Edwards and Humes more room to run. Hillock was electric in this one today.

Continuously airing out huge passes to dynamic receiver Savaughn Magnaye-Jones, the first of which resulted in the Mustangs second touchdown of the game, a 36 yard completion to the Windsor end-zone. The chemistry between these two is clear and continues to grow game after game. Hillock threw for 321 on 15 completions on the day.

"Savvys a great player and he makes my job easy." said Hillock of his receiver. "The chemistry from training together helps for sure but the coaches also have a great game plan to get the ball in his hands. He's really special."

Magnaye-Jones has seen a significant increase in playing time since Hillock made his OUA debut on September 25th against Laurier. This is due to the chemistry the two developed in high school but also because of his own athleticism. Route-running and good hands are an established part of his game and the more targets he has the better he will become.

The Mustangs average 40 points per game this season, they managed that with 5 minutes to go in the first half. This team combined an explosive start, on both sides of the ball, with the ability to close early.

"I feel like were really energized and in a good place right now." said Hillock "We're focused on keeping this thing rolling and the real season begins now."

With this win Western has clinched the West Division and will begin the playoff journey next weekend.

After an extended tie-breaker scenario, as four teams finished the season at 3-3, The Mustangs will host the Waterloo Warriors in the #1 vs. #4 on November 6 at 1pm at Western Alumni Stadium.

"This group understands that we have to do this one week at a time." said Knight "We have to focus on our assignments, watch the film, understand our next opponent, then go out there on Saturday and execute."

Tickets will be available starting Monday (Nov. 1) at 12pm, fans can go to westernmustangs.ca/tickets for full details.
