St. Catharines, ON – The Mustangs hit the road Sunday evening as they travelled to Brock in search of their first win of the season, but ultimately fell short in overtime in a final 2-1 loss.
Neither team could take control in the first period, as the opening twenty saw a back-and-forth style of play from the two teams as neither could generate much offensive zone time.
At just over two minutes in the purple and white would send their powerplay out onto the ice after Hannah Irwin was called for hooking. The Badgers would receive the same call one minute later, making it 4-on-4. As the Mustang penalty expired, they then had 1:12 with the man advantage, but ultimately couldn't capitalize.
Western's powerplay would get put to work for the second time in the period with just under six minutes left on the clock, as Brock was assessed a roughing penalty. The home team's penalty kill couldn't be cracked by the Mustangs, as time ran out on the powerplay and 5-on-5 play resumed.
With six seconds on the clock Brock took another penalty, this time for cross-checking. Despite some chances at both ends, the teams would finish the opening frame tied 0-0.
The Mustangs looked to turn the tilt in their favour, as they started the period with almost a full two minutes remaining on the powerplay. Despite not being able to find the back of the net, Western looked to build off their momentum.
A hit to the head penalty was called to the disagreement of the Badger bench, sending the Mustangs back to the powerplay. This time, they would take advantage.
Off assists from Adeline Kristoff and Emily Ignagni, Madison Beishuizen found the back of the net to give Western the lead at 14:42.
It only took three minutes for Brock to tie it up, as they did so in highlight reel fashion. The period would end with the scoreboard reading one a piece. Mustang net-minder Kaitlyn Booth put forth a strong second period showing and stopped many high danger chances from the Badgers as she stood strong between the pipes.
The Mustangs were inches away from regaining the lead at the start of the third, as Beishuizen's shot almost found the net after hitting off the goaltender's glove but found the post instead.
Halfway through the frame, Western would produce a crucial four-minute penalty kill as the Badgers looked to regain the lead through a powerplay from a double minor slew foot call.
The penalty kill was effective and refused to give Brock extended zone time.
As time ran down, the purple and white threw some chances on their oppositions net but ultimately couldn't reclaim the lead. The teams would need 3-on-3 overtime to decide the match.
Sam Wood started the seven-minute overtime period with a good chance up the right side but sent her shot wide. Brock countered with a 2-on-1, but Irwin made a nice play to prevent a good chance. Brock would ultimately score moments later to take the win against Western in overtime.
