83rd Annual Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy Winner for 2020-21

London, ON – Today, we are so excited to announce the winner of the 83rd annual Western Mustangs 2020-21 Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy Award: Sebastian Paulins!

The Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the top male student athlete who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has made the greatest contribution to intercollegiate athletics within the university.  

The first ever Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy was awarded to Jack Perry for his contributions to the Mustangs Football and Track & Field in 1947 and 1948 seasons.

Sebastian Paulins was one of three finalists for the Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy, announced on Thursday April 1. The other two finalists were: Brayden Ambo – Wrestling, Curtis Ames – Rowing. Congratulations to all the nominees.

Sebastian Paulins

Sebastian Paulins is a member of the Western Mustangs Swimming Team, and has been a member since starting his career in 2016. He is now in his fifth year of the Social Science program at Western University. Paulins is also a recipient of a 2021 Purple Blanket Award.

Throughout his career, Paulins has won numerous First Colour Awards, was the Swimming Team's Rookie of the Year in his first year, and won the team's Male M.V.P. in his most recent season. 

Paulins came in first place in the OUA in 2019 and 2020 for the 400m free competition, and in 2020, had come in first place in the 1500 free, 400 IM, and 200 fly competitions. Paulins was a 2016-17, 2018-19 and 2019-20 OUA 1st Team All Star, and most recently was recognized as an OUA Male Athlete of the Year for Western. He also received the Dr. Jeno Tihanyi IM Excellence Award in 2020. 

We spoke to Western Mustangs Swimming Head Coach Paul Midgley about Paulins' achievements on the team and his nomination for this award: "The only surprising thing about Sebastian is that he is surprised by the high level results he produces. He brings 'it' to every workout and is very deserving of his elite performance." says Coach Midgley.
