Guelph, ON – A back and forth duel between Western & Guelph went the Gryphons way on Saturday night as they picked up a 23-21 win on the road.
The Mustangs offence through most of the first three quarters was reminiscent of the 2019 regular season meeting between the two that was heavily impacted by special teams.
Brian Garrity had a pair of field goals in the first quarter to put the Mustangs up 6-0.
The Gryphons were able to respond early in the 2
nd quarter to take a 7-6 lead, but with just seconds remaining in the half, Garrity would split the uprights yet again to give Western an 11-10 lead.
Garrity would come through again in the 3
rd quarter with his fourth FG of the game and once again give Western a 14-13 lead.
After Guelph overtook and extended their lead to 23-14, Jackson White connected with Savaughn Magnaye-Jones for a 61 year catch and run which brought the game to a two-point spread at 23-21 Guelph with just over 5 minutes remaining in the 4
th quarter.
With just over a minute remaining the Mustangs sent Garrity out for a chance to take the lead, but the 48-yard attempt hit the left upright to keep the score at 23-21 and that would be the final.
The Mustangs will be back at home next Saturday when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks for a 1pm kick-off. Tickets will go on early next week, stay tuned to
