10/9/2022 9:50:00 PM

Windsor, ON - A hard-fought battle came up just a bit short for the Mustangs Softball team as they leave the 2022 CCSA Softball National Championship with a silver medal after a 9-0 loss to St. Clair College in the finals.

Western battled out some tight games through round-robin play with 1-0 wins over Calgary & Ottawa and adding a 3-0 win over Humber, they finished 1st in their pool and were into the semi-finals against the UBCO Heat.

In the semis, the Mustangs got out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd inning but UBCO would claw their way back into the game in the top of the 3rd inning with 3 runs of their own to make it a 4-3 game. Western would extend the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning when Blythe Hilpert would drive in a pair of runs to make it 6-3 and Western would hold of for the win and a berth into the gold medal game. Aimee Leduc pitched a complete game with 7 strikeouts over the 7-inning game.

In the gold medal game on Sunday afternoon, both teams battled hard early but couldn't crack the scoreboard. In the top of the 3rd inning, St. Clair found their way when they got an RBI single and followed that up with a deep drive to left centre field that was just out of the reach of Madison Mahon and short-hopped the fence which drove in 2 more runs and made it a 3-0 St Clair lead.

St Clair would add 2 more runs in the 5th off a home run and then would add 4 more runs in the 6th inning to secure the 9-0 win.

While it wasn't the result the Mustangs were hoping for, Mustang pitcher Aimee Leduc and catcher Meg Hamilton were selected as Tournament All-Stars.

The Mustangs now return to league play with 6 games next weekend (all double headers), all at home. Friday night against Guelph, Saturday afternoon against Laurier & Sunday morning against Waterloo. This will serve as a tune-up for the OUS Provincial Championships which start on October 22.
