Early Offence Pushes Mustangs to OUA West Final

WATERLOO, ON - Western traveled to Waterloo for their Western Conference semi-final matchup against the Warriors and managed to upset the top seeded team. Western won 2-1 through early goal scoring and lockdown defense.

Western played a full 60 minute game on Saturday afternoon, showcasing their ultimate playoff form in the victory.

Brooke Dicicco opened the scoring for the Mustangs 2 minutes into the opening period.

The all important, and ever sought after first goal proved useful for the Mustangs as it set the tone and allowed them to settle into the game early. Dicicco spoke post game.

"As a team we emphasized the importance of having a good start and winning the first period. Scoring early gave us momentum and we were able to build off it for the rest of the game"

Grace Bellamy followed this trend, scoring in the opening minute of the second frame.

Western established their play early and often in this game and was able to focus on tidy defense to ensure the victory. Bellamy said after the game.

"The atmosphere in the room after the game eas crazy. we were all so happy and proud of how we played, and we are really excited to take this momentum into the next game."

Both teams combined for an 0/7 showing out of their power plays, which goes to show how important defense is in playoff style hockey.

Kaitlyn Booth stood strong in her crease, only allowing 1 shot past her while turning away all 20 others. Dicicco finished her night with this quoute.

"We knew coming into this game how important it was to come together and play for one another. It was a team effort and everyone contributed and supported one another from start to finish."

The Mustangs defense complimented their efficient goal scoring and allowed them to secure the win and their appearance in the semi final game.
