Aylmer, ON - A tightly contested OUA Figure Skating Championship saw the Western Mustangs come away with a team silver medal on Wednesday afternoon after the two day competition inside the East Elgin Community Centre.
The event was highlighted by Clara Campbell taking gold in the Free Skate, while Gratiana Chen & Leah Kuo also topped the podium in the Intermediate Similar Pair Free Skate.
"Great skates by everyone! Special mention to Clara Campbell's skate in freeskate and a gold medal." said Mustangs Head Coach Alma Moir. "Gratiana Chen & Leah Kuo 's personal best skates and our rookie of the year was definitely Hannah Gray, skating in 4 event and getting 4 medals!"
On day one the Mustangs picked up 4 silvers (Star 10 Women, Open Pair, Star 10 Dance & Novice Women) & 2 bronze (Star 8-9 Dance, Novice Dance)
Day two saw more hardware added with Western picking up four more silver medals (Gratiana Chen - Star 10 Free Skate, Jasmine Wu - Star 10 Solo Dance, Hannah Gray - Novice Short Program, Clara Campbell, Hannah Gray, Julia LaBella, Madison Shaw - Free Skate Fours & Synchro.)
The Mustangs also added three bronze medals from Jasmine Wu & Erica Lumsden - Star 8/9 Similar Dance, Clara Campbell & Hannah Gray Senior Similar Pair Free Skate, Payton Beckett, Victoria Morgado, Alyssa Evans, Kaitlin Lees - Dance Fours.
"It was awesome to see how excited all the athletes were to come together on the ice and get a chance to compete." said Moir "Team spirit was on a big time high for the full 2 days of OU's. Makes you remember that this is what it is all about!"
