LONDON, ON - The Western Mustangs hosted the Guelph Gryphons on their Friday night seniors night. The Gryphons got the better of the Mustangs in this occasion and are walking away with a 7-0 win.
The Mustangs had trouble containing the Gryphon offense, allowing 3 goals on 3 shots and several odd-man rushes throughout every period.
The focus of this game however, lies with the seniors who have all been instrumental to the program on and off the ice. Head Coach Clarke Singer spoke on the players behalf post game.
"it meant a lot to them, we talked before the game about how important the people side of things are here. It's not just hockey players at this level, it's a lot about the people and the relationships you have."
Six members of the current Mustang roster are graduating at the end of this season and all 6 are All Academic All Canadian athletes. This achievement speaks to the hockey program and of course the athletes themselves.
Dylan Myskiw came in relief of Dave Ovsjannikov early in the game and did his best to solidify the Western defensive corps.
This isn't the seniors night the players envisioned but this one game does not sum up the players time apart of Western hockey. Singer agrees.
"I think we have a pretty good culture here in terms of how close the team is. You know, it isn't really evident by our effort tonight, but overall, we've got a great group of young men and I'm really proud of them in terms of how they interact and how hard they work."
Western looks to get back in the win column, and push for the playoffs, against the same Guelph team Saturday night after their recent skid.
The Mustangs visit Guelph next for a Saturday evening 7:00 pm game.
