LONDON, ON - Western and Windsor played in their second of 3 matchups on Friday afternoon. The Lancers completed a late game upset finishing 2-1 after overtime.
The first period was hard fought for both teams as they entered the second period grid locked at 0 - 0. The Mustangs battled late in the frame and found their stride.
Sam Wood was able to capitalize off her own rebound and give the Mustangs their only goal of the match.
Wood was the source for the Mustangs offense and was a problem for the Lancers in her own defensive end. She spoke post game.
"Going into the third we were up 1-0, we just needed to keep that lead and have a good high player, and we did that for the most part and then lost it in the last 30 seconds."
Brooke Diccico is a member of both the power play and penalty kill units as both were necessary in this contest. The PK managed to kill 3 minors in a row while the PP just couldn't find that extra goal. Diccico said post game.
"I think we dictated play for two periods and then maybe got a bit too comfortable and they were able to capitalize on their 6 on 5."
The Mustangs couldn't find the back of the net in 2 of 3 periods, and not for lack of trying. Diccico and Wood stood out constantly generating off rush and cycle chances, just never finding the back of the net.
This game was a low scoring affair but for the Mustangs that was their downfall. Head Coach Candice Moxley commented post game.
"I thought we didn't have the same jump in our step as we did the previous night. We still had to work through a few things D-Zone and making sure we are getting pucks out."
Western and Windosr are slated to play eachother in the first round of the playoffs, the game on Saturday will determine home ice advantage, Moxely's advice for her team is simple.
"Short-term memory. We need to move passed this and go down and win a game on the road."
Mustangs and Windsor meet for the third and final time of the regular season Saturday March 5th at 4pm in Windsor.
