London, ON - In their sixth game of the season, the Western Men's Soccer team beat the Algoma Thunderbirds 4-0 on Sunday to end off a successful weekend at home.
Mustangs started the first half strong, with lots of momentum coming off of a big win Saturday.Â
They were able to generate lots of early chances, but it wasn't until the 19th minute that they were on the board. Forward Jovan Williams found the ball at the top of the box, beat his defender and hammered it into the far left corner to make it 1-0.
"The ball sat up at the top of the box, I did a step over then opened up and took a crack at it with my left foot and luckily it went in," said Williams.
In the 30th minute, Western was awarded a penalty. Forward Owura Boateng stepped in and scored his first of the season, extending the Mustangs lead.
Not long after in the 42nd minute, captain Patrick Melo kicked a perfectly placed corner for forward Charlie Bontis to find and notch his third of the season.
The second half saw new faces who were able to generate offensive chances and maintain pressure in the Algoma end.
In the 65th minute, Mustangs were awarded a penalty shot. Forward Ehsan Hirji capitalized on the chance to get his fourth of the season, making it 4-0 for Western.
"Algoma made it tough for us today," said head coach Martin Painter. "It's tough playing the second day in a back-to-back game, but we did enough to get the win."
"I thought it was a good performance from the guys. It's tough playing back to back, but we were able to keep the momentum going," added Williams. "We're moving forward towards Brock on Thursday."
The Mustangs faceoff against Brock under the lights this Thursday, September 22. Kick-off is at 8:15pm.Â
