Box Score KINGSTON, ON - It was a close game for the Western Mustangs as they faced off against the Queen's University Gaels for the first time this regular season, and were defeated narrowly, 107-97.
As the Mustangs came off Friday night's loss against Ontario Tech, they returned to the court in Kingston on Saturday as the top offensive team in the conference, against a Gaels team that has only lost one game so far this season.
The Gaels opened the scoring and went up 5-1 in the first minutes of the night.
The Mustangs were doing well at closing in on the ball handler in the paint, forcing the Gaels to rush a shot or quickly pass back out.
Not long after, Western had managed to bring the game back together, overtaking Queens in scoring, and pulling down just as many rebounds as their opponent.
Not only did the Mustangs manage to go on a 11-0 run and take the lead heading into the second quarter, but they had begun making several steals, rattling the Gaels in the paint.
Queens began to struggle with their long-range shots, allowing the Mustangs to quickly turnover the possession and drive shots in on the other end.
As the first quarter ended the Mustangs were in the lead, 22-17.
Two minutes into the quarter, Western was up by nine points, the largest lead of the game so far for either team.
On defense, the Mustangs were setting up in the paint and sticking close to their man, not giving any room for the Gaels to have any open chances.
The Gaels had cut Western's lead down to four, as the Mustangs slowed down in their scoring while Queens were quick to get down the court on offense.
For the first time since the first quarter Queens managed to pull themselves into the lead with four minutes remaining in the half. Western still did their best to take up space in the paint, but the Gaels were still managing to put up shots from further out which helped them grab the lead.
With the final seconds of the half coming to an end the Gaels were in the lead by two, at 48-46.
Western held to their zone to start the quarter, and the Gaels were intense on all ends of the court, holding onto the lead for most of the third quarter.
The Mustangs did briefly pull back up to the lead, but the margin stayed within one possession throughout the middle of the quarter.
The Gaels were up by six, four minutes into the second half, and Western was panicking and made a few rushed plays to move the ball down the court resulting in Queens pulling ahead to double digits for their largest lead so far.
Western was holding very strong through the bottom half of the quarter, as they switched to a man on man defense, allowing them to be more aggressive on the ball.
The Mustangs put up six straight points before the end of the quarter, and there was only an eight-point difference between the teams, as the Gaels were up once again heading into the final quarter, 83-75.
The first half of the fourth quarter was much more intense, especially with controversial calls being made by officials on both ends of the court, frustrating both teams and benches.
The Gaels pulled up to a nine-point lead, and the Mustangs were still fighting hard, cutting the lead back down within two possessions with only a few minutes left in the game.
There was incredibly high energy from both teams throughout the final ten minutes of play as neither team was giving up space.
It was a hard fought battle right throughout the final quarter, and ultimately the Gaels were victorious over the Mustangs, 107-96.
