Mustangs shutout York 2-0 in Monday Afternoon Matchup

London, ON – The Mustangs shutout the York Lions 2-0 in a rare Monday afternoon game at Thompson Arena.

"The players handled the different gameday setup well," said Mustangs Head Coach Candice Moxley "I think our powerplay has been a bit snake bitten as of late so I was happy we got one (powerplay goal) tonight and I liked our effort overall,"

Western had a few opportunities on the powerplay in the first period, including an abbreviated 5-on-3, but weren't able to convert and the score remained tied at 0-0 through 20 minutes.

In the second period, while still on the powerplay, the Mustangs would strike early. Emma Campbell got the puck at the York blueline from the corner and sent a wrister towards the York net, it would make its way through traffic and past the Lions netminder to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

"Coming out with that early push was exactly what we needed," said Moxley "We had to take the momentum and push the tempo to our pace and play our game and we did just that to start the second there and it worked our way tonight,"

A few minutes later, The Mustangs would be on the attack again. Madeline DesRosiers would lead the 4-on-2 Mustangs attack through neutral ice and sent a crisp, tape-to-tape pass right on the blade of Avry Pedersen who skated the puck in and sent a wrist shot to the top right corner of the York net and give Western a 2-0 lead.

The third period would see the Lions try to push the pace but found themselves on the wrong side of three penalty calls in the final frame and Western would hold on to take the 2-0 win.

Kaitlyn Booth made 17 saves in the win for her fourth shutout of the season.

"She's been a backbone for us all season and it's great to see her get rewarded with another one in the shutout column," said Moxley.

The next game for this Mustangs will be this Friday night at 7 pm as Western will play host to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Fans can buy their tickets at WesternMustangs.ca/tickets or watch the action on OUA.tv
