Victoria, BC – The Mustangs found themselves in unfamiliar territory at the CCSA National Championship in Victoria, BC this weekend as they finished in 5th place after a 3-2 weekend.

The Mustangs started the event of Friday with a tough 7-2 loss to the Durham Lords but rebounded later in the day to win 5-2 over the host Victoria Vikes.

On Saturday Western started the day with a commanding 8-0 win over the Calgary Dinos which put them back on a decent track in pool B. Later on Saturday Western suffered a devastating 3-0 loss to the Humber Hawks. The game was tied at 0-0 into the 5th but a walk with 2 outs then a hit and an error scored a run for Humber, and then in the 6th inning with 2 outs, a line drive dropped which plated 2 more runs. The loss eliminated Western from medal contention.

The Mustangs would finish out the tournament with a 7-1 win over Victoria and give them a 3-2 record for the weekend.

Western catcher Megan Hamilton and 2nd baseman Blythe Hilpert were named to the tournament all-star team at the closing ceremonies.

"Having the opportunity to compete against tough competition and spending a lot of time together as a team will help us prepare for the OUS championships that are coming up in a couple weeks" said Hilpert

"Not the turnout we wanted but the team came out and played hard." Said Hamilton "Getting to come to BC and face new competition is always a privilege that we look forward to."

The Mustangs will play a pair of games against Brock on Saturday, Oct 14th and then will take on the best in the province at the OUS (Ontario University Softball) Championship in Paris, ON on October 21.
