Western drops a close one with Ottawa 84-77

Box Score LONDON, ON – A night after taking down the other institution from the nations capital, the Mustangs faced off against the uOttawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night.

Before the game, Aryan Sharma was honoured by the Mustangs Basketball team as he surpassed 1000 career points in his OUA career in the win on Friday night.
 
To the game now, Ottawa won the jump and were first out of the gate, getting off to a 9-6 start. Sharma put the Mustangs on the board, scoring their first six points.
 
Tyson Dunn got into the action taking the ball coast to coast laying it in and Kennedy Charles also checked in early, grabbing an offensive rebound and laying it in. 
 
The first quarter was fast-paced, with both teams playing with high intensity. Mikyle Malabuyoc finished a tough layup through contact, putting the Mustangs down two, 16-14. The first quarter closed with the Mustangs trailing 18-14. 
 
Sharma got going in the 2nd quarter, finishing a dunk in the lane to keep the game within two. Dunn also kept the momentum going, spinning inside and finishing at the rim. The Gee-Gees continued to score from the 3-point line building a five-point lead with 7:03 left in the half.
 
Jerric Palma knocked down a contested 3 to put the Mustangs back within 2 points with 5:33 left in the quarter. 
 
The Mustangs continued to buckle down defensively and put some pressure on the Gee-Gees offence, keeping the game tied at 28 with 2:30 left in the half. 
 
Ottawa finished off the half on a 10-4 run, closing out the quarter leading 37-32. 
 
Noah Otshudi opened the scoring for Western in the second half, knocking down a floater, but Ottawa again got out of the gates quickly, going on an 8-4 run to start the half. 
 
The Gee-Gees continued to play solid all-round basketball, moving the ball well and scoring from all angles, maintaining their lead 52-47 with 4:35 left in the third quarter. 
 
Tyson Dunn knocked down a 3, followed by a layup and a block by Kennedy Charles kept the Mustangs in the game. Ottawa continued to put the pressure on Western, both from the 3-point line and in the paint, stretching their lead to 10 with 1:59 left remaining in the quarter. 
 
Milan John knocked down a pair of free-throws to bring the Mustangs within six to end the quarter. 
 
Matteo Zagar started off the 4th quarter with a layup, cutting the lead to four, followed by Dunn who drove to the lane and finished with his left on his way to 18 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. 
 
Sharma knocked down an elbow jumper to bring the Mustangs within four with less than six minutes to play, to finish with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
 
John drove to the rim with 3:15 left and completed the three-point play to bring the Mustangs within 2. Ottawa continued to keep the pressure on and extended their lead to seven with 1:15 left in the game.

They held on to this lead and closed out the game winning 84-77. 
 
"We can compete with the best teams in the country. We have to keep working and keep improving and we can be one of the best" said Mustangs Head Coach Brad Campbell "Defensively we need to get better and capitalize on defensive rebounding. We need to work on executing our offence more consistently."
 
Milan John, who finished the game with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, commented on what helped the team this weekend, "Just staying together, we had a solid week of practice which helped us prepare for these games. We trusted one another."
