THUNDER BAY, ON - Â The Western Mustangs displayed defensive dominance over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday night, as they secured a 10-point victory, remaining undefeated against the team for the past three seasons. Â Â
Heading into tonight's game against the Thunderwolves, the Mustangs were on a four-game winning streak, having gone undefeated against Lakehead since they faced each other back in 2019.Â
Despite the Thunderwolves being the first to score, the Mustangs immediately took the lead right back from them with a strong opening score from Morgan Tamminga.Â
It was fairly even between the two teams throughout the first quarter, with the largest lead being only four points.Â
As the first quarter closed out, the game was tied with both teams putting up 18 points.Â

Western were strong to attack to open up the second quarter, each time the Thunderwolves took the lead, the Mustangs immediately returned and put up the next points to grab back the lead.Â
There was excellent ball movement from the Mustangs, as they were making smart passes, and taking their time to find the best option.Â
The Thunderwolves were strong in the paint in the second, pushing through the Mustangs' defence and scoring off offensive rebounds.Â
Western extended their lead up to nine, as the first half concluded with the visiting team leading the way at 42-33.Â

Lakehead was really struggling to get started offensively the start the second half of the game, with the Mustangs applying intense defensive pressure throughout the first few minutes.
Western was able to extend their lead back up to nine, with back-to-back layups from Emily Capretta, and strong defensive pressure on the rebound from the Mustangs.Â
Continued intensity from the Mustangs right from the Lakehead inbound caused 11 turnovers against the home side in the third quarter.
This third quarter was defined by the consistent and forceful defense from the Mustangs, which began to frustrate the Thunderwolves who continued to struggle in putting up points at the same pace as their opponent.Â
Western remained powerful on both ends of the court, and continued swarming the ball making it difficult for Lakehead to move the ball effectively.Â
As the third quarter came to a close, the Mustangs held the Thunderwolves to only six points in the period while collecting 18 themselves, holding the lead up 57-39 as the fourth quarter was underway.Â

Lakehead managed to narrow the Mustangs' lead back down to 10 points in the opening minutes of the final quarter. However, following a timeout from Western, the visiting team snapped back into gear and were once more dominating on the rebound and second-chance shots.Â
The Thunderwolves did come out a bit stronger in the fourth quarter than the previous, but it wasn't enough to overcome the impressive performance from the Mustangs in the third.Â
As the match concluded, Western collected their fifth win in a row against Lakehead, remaining undefeated against their opponent since their loss in 2019.Â
The final score was 66-56 in favour of the Mustangs with three Western players putting up points in the double-digits, Paris Alexander (16), MacKeely Shantz (16), and Emily Capretta (13).Â
