Kingston, ON - The Mustangs secured their third consecutive bronze medal at the OUA Championships this past weekend in Kingston.
"A personal highlight from the weekend was the ongoing support from my teammates and the energy we all brought to the courts," said Sophie Pinfold on the weekend. "Growing up playing squash, which is an individual sport, I never had a team behind me. Being able to look to my teammates for motivation, reinforcement, strategy, and a laugh is what made this weekend so special. Having a group of people that want the best for you and vice versa is what makes a team so strong. Hearing them cheer for me when I needed an energy boost is what kept me pushing through games I didn't think I could play."
Western started the tournament on Friday with a 7-0 win over Brock, before losing 5-2 to McMaster.
On Saturday, the 'Stangs secured a 5-2 victory over Waterloo. The purple and white then faced-off against Queen's in the semi-finals, where they fell 7-0.
The bronze medal match took place at 11am on Sunday. The Mustangs proved to be victorious, securing 3rd place with a 4-3 win.
Earning wins for Western in the bronze medal match were Laura Van Deursen, Sophie Pinfold, Madison Draayer, and Alessia Ferris while Sun Eui Choi, Madeline Khan, and Deena Shah won their matches for Toronto.
"Going for bronze today matches were tied up 3-3," said Ferris. "Meaning my match was the deciding match on if we would win. I thought I would be more nervous but having my team outside of the court cheering loud and proud my adrenaline kicked in. Winning that match in 5 was my personal highlight of the weekend."
Western's Alessia Ferris was named an All-Star as Major Awards and All-Stars were announced by the OUA after the tournament.
"I'm so proud of each player. They all truly put their heart in each match," said Ferris. "Our rookies came in hot this year eager to win, although we didn't get gold we played some unbelievable squash and really showed how hard work and consistency is key."
The Mustangs season comes to a close after this weekend.
