London, ON - Today's team recognition as part of the 2023 Mustangs Season of Celebration is the Mustangs Table Tennis Teams.


 

The Mustangs competed at the 2023 Great Lakes Regional Championship at the Rochester Institute of Technology, winning both the Women's Team Championship and Coed Teams Championship. 

Western was automatically seeded directly into single elimination in the Coed Team Competition, being one of the top three schools out of 11 schools registered. 

The Mustangs then beat the University of Michigan 3-1 in the semi-finals to book their ticket to the final. The purple and white topped the University of Waterloo 3-1 later on in the day on Saturday to secure the title. 

On the women's side, the Mustangs took part in round robin play, on Saturday, the 'Stangs first beat Cornell 3-1, before topping the University of Michigan 3-2 right after. 

The purple and white then took on Toronto, where they won 3-2, before going on to beat Michigan State 4-0. 

As the Mustangs were the team with the most points in the round robin, they were awarded the regional championship title. 

With the win the Mustangs qualified for the 2023 College Table Tennis National Championships in Round Rock, Texas.

At the national championship, the Mustangs Women's team drew the #4 seed and took on the University of Illinois Chicago and picked up a 4-0 win. In the second round they beat the #6 ranked Georgia Tech 3-1 and advanced to take on top ranked UCLA. The Mustangs met a tough battle and fell 3-0 to the eventual championship winning squad but Western finishes with a 3rd place finish overall.

On the coed side, after drawing a first round bye the Mustangs met WashingtonU and picked up a 3-1 win. In the next round Western would take on the #2 ranked UCLA and would fall 3-1 and finish in 7th place.
