London, ON – The 2023 CFL Draft saw four members of the Mustangs selected on Tuesday night.

The first Mustang to be selected was First Team All-Canadians Offensive Lineman Phil Grohovac. The Victoria, B.C. native was selected by the Edmonton Elks in the 3rd round, 20th overall.
"It was crazy, I was expecting to get a phone call first but out of no where GMarsh (Mustangs Head Coach Greg Marshall) just said "Hey Phil, The Elks" then I got the call a minute later it was a huge weight lifted of my chest." said Grohovac "I can't wait to get to Edmonton, I used to go to games there in the summer when visiting family and I think it will be a good spot for me."

Next up, a pair of Mustangs were picked in close succession starting with Spencer Nichols being picked by the Toronto Argonauts with the 36th overall selection in the 4th round.

"I was so excited to see my name get called and even more pumped to see that it was the Argos! I can't wait to get started." said Nichols "Up until today it was a guessing game on where I was going to be living, now that I know it's Toronto I couldn't be happier!"

Four picks later his high school teammate at South S.S. Robert Panabaker was taken by the Hamilton Tiger Cats with the 40th overall selection in the 5th round.

"Draft night was something I'll never forget." said Panabaker "It was one of the most stressful, thrilling, and exciting nights of my life. I kept my gatherings quite small with my family, best friend and girlfriend. To have the people closest to me made the night that much more special!"

"Spencer and Robert's journey to the CFL have been amazing to watch. They were a big part of the success we had as a program while they attended South." said Mike Stenning, Head Coach at South S.S. "Spencer was the most dominate physical force in the box while Robert was responsible for shutting down our opponents best offensive weapons. We are so proud of their accomplishments and are looking forward to what they will contribute at the professional level."

Rounding out the Western selections in the draft was Defensive Back Brendan Murphy who was picked by the Argonauts 63rd overall in the 7th round.

"I am incredibly proud of them. They have been instrumental to our success and have done so much for this program over their time with us." Said Gaetan Richard, Offensive Coordinator for the Mustangs Football team. "It's great to see their hard work pay off as they are provided this great opportunity to play the game they love professionally. They will represent Mustang football well, I can't wait to watch them play."
