London, ON - Join our amazing Sports & Recreation team. We are currently hiring for the position of Director, Recreation & Active Well-Being.
The Director, Recreation & Active Well-Being reports into the Director, Sports & Recreation and will provide strategic leadership and oversight for the Recreation & Active Well-being programs and services, including supporting the promotion and implementation of all events, activities and infrastructure. The Director leads the establishment of short and long-term strategies, processes and initiatives related to Recreation & Active Well-being, monitoring and evaluating operation effectiveness and initiating changes required for improvement for a student community in excess of 30,000, a faculty and staff community of 5,000, and thousands more in external community members, program participants and stakeholders. They will also cultivate relationships on campus, locally and nationally to enhance the profile and awareness recreation programs and activities.
Some other aspects of this role include (but are not limited to):
- Provides strategic and integrated leadership, in the design and delivery of programs and services to a team of recreation professional staff and student staff
- Establishes priorities and annual performance plans and targets, distributes work and resources, and assigns project teams (currently 4 full-time professional staff, and oversight of approximately 5 part-time staff and up to 500-plus student staff)
- Supports the development of the portfolio's budget, and manages the portfolio's financial resources, ensuring alignment with the Department's and Western's strategic plans
- Manages the planning, organization, promotions and oversight of year-round comprehensive recreation programs, operations, services, major events and other activities of the portfolio, including but not limited to:
- Intramural sports, fitness and wellness and other instructional classes, personal training and related fitness centre, and strength and conditioning activities, programs and services, aquatics programs, dance programs, sports and recreation club programming, informal and open/drop-in program, outdoor and digital programming, special events and tournaments, and other emergent and developing trends and best practices in the industry
- Actively seeks and collaborates with other campus groups on sport, health and well-being issues, recreational programming, social prescriptions, student engagement and event planning on campus
- Ensures that staff work safely, in accordance with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as University policies
The Recreation and Active Well-Being department includes facilities, programming, and services that promote emotional, mental, physical, social and overall well-being through the participation in active living. By participating in programming, students will be encouraged to create and maintain a healthy lifestyle, will have increased self-confidence, improved stress management, and will have enhanced social connections within our community. Recreation also offers experiential experiences for students through our many leadership opportunities. Participation in recreation improves the quality of life and helps to develop a thriving lifestyle for students, staff and faculty during their time on campus and throughout their lives.
