The Western Mustangs took on the York Lions in their second game of the weekend. The team played York in Toronto on Friday, taking away a 3-2 win.
The Lions made progress up the side of the pitch with a shot on goal early on in the game. Samantha St. Croix made a diving save preventing an early goal for York.
There was an attempt on goal 16 minutes into the game by Western number 27, Hannah Vickers, but the ball went high. A corner from Western 21 minutes into the game was taken by Maddy Skinner and received by Reese Fowler but was shot high over the goal. Western maintained the pressure on York with another corner 26 minutes into the game. The ball was sent out of the box by York.
Reese Fowler was able to put Western on the scoreboard in the 29
th minute of the game with a ball that curved into the net.
Mackenzie Bilotta took a shot at York's goal in the 40
th minute but was not able to find the back of the net. However, two minutes later Bilotta would add a goal onto the scoreboard giving the Mustangs a two goal lead over the Lions.
York began to increase the pressure on Western with a few minutes to go in the opening half of the game. The Lions sent a ball into Western's box, but it was sent out by St. Croix. The majority of the opening half of the game was played in the Lions' half of the field, showing just how much the Mustangs were dominating the game. The score at halftime was 2-0 to the Mustangs.
In the 63
rd minute of the game, Reese Fowler sent a shot towards the Lions' goal. However, the shot was unfortunately high. Although York was able to gain more possession in the second half of the game, it was still mainly defensive. Western maintained the majority of possession in the second half of the game and did not concede any goals. The final score remained 2-0 to the Mustangs.
As this was the Mustangs' second game against York this week, when speaking to Head Coach Martin Painter after the game, we asked if there were two things the team were focusing on coming into this second game against York. He explained that "we had to improve defensively in terms of our decision making and the intensity of our movements and our 1v1 defending and I thought we did that so that's one, and I think the second thing would be our composure and possession which again, I think there were some good moments and some moments where we still have to make better decisions."
Reese Fowler ended the game with one goal and one assist and when asked about her performance today, Coach Painter noted that "Reese was fantastic and also excellent defensively. She's a special player, you know, works hard every single game … she can shoot from a distance, great crosser of the ball so it was great to see her get the goal and the assist, and I think she deserved it."
The Western Mustangs will take on the Waterloo Warriors on September 29
th in front of their home crowd at 6pm.
