Mustangs take both games of doubleheader over Laurier

London, ON - The Mustangs played a neutral site game of sorts on Sunday as they took on the Laurier Goldenhawks at Royal Field in Dorchester, picking up a pair of wins in close games.

GAME 1 - Western takes the lead late and defeats Laurier 3-2.

The game was tied at two in the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Nuernberger singled, scoring one run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Western pitchers struck out five, while Laurier Golden Hawks sat down four.

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the second after Will Pollard singled, scoring one run.

Nuernberger singled, which helped Western Mustangs tie the game at two in the bottom of the third.

Lucas Shannon earned the win for Western Mustangs. The righty gave up four hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out three and walking none. 

Justin Hawke opened the game for Western Mustangs. The starting pitcher allowed two hits and two runs over three innings, striking out two and walking two.

Nuernberger drove the middle of the lineup, leading Western Mustangs with two runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. 


GAME 2 - Western earns walk-off win over Golden Hawks

It came down to the wire on Sunday at the Field of Dreams, as Western grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 2-1, over Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Mustangs were down 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Spencer Shannon singled, scoring two runs.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Western pitchers struck out seven, while Laurier Golden Hawks sat down six.

Laurier were the first to get on the board in the fourth when Davis Llewellyn grounded out, scoring one run.

Justin Stonkus opened the game for the Mustangs. The right-handed pitcher allowed four hits and one run over five innings, striking out six and walking two. 

Michael Dodaro, Parker McLean, Shannon, and Matt Isaacson each collected a hit for Western. Shannon went 1-for-1 at the plate as he led the team with two runs batted in and the walk off hit for the victory!

Western will see the Golden Hawks again next weekend as the two teams will meet for a pair of games on Saturday at Aldridge Field for 12pm & 3pm starts and then they will wrap up the 2023 schedule with a trip to Windsor on Sunday when they meet the Lancers for a pair of games at 12pm & 3pm.
