London, ON - The Mustangs fall to the Warriors, 5-2, during their second back-to-back game.
Friday night, the Mustangs fell to the Warriors 2-1, in a hard fought game on the road. But Saturday afternoon, they had home ice advantage and hoped to take the win.
As these teams are familiar with the others style of play from Fridays game, the first twenty minutes of this game started off with back and forth action between both zones. The Mustangs and the Warriors both had created great scoring changes during the first half of the period.
After a killed off Mustangs penalty, the Warriors had positive momentum and more energy to go off. They opened the scoring from a rebound shot that got past Mustangs goalie, Brooke Vaccari. Paige Rynne from the Warriors got her team in the lead with eight minutes left in the first.
With a few minutes left in the period, both teams fought to be the one to get the next goal. Great plays were seen on the ice which came from both the Mustangs and the Warriors. Many of the Mustangs chances were stopped by the Warriors post versus the Warriors goalie. The first period ended with the score remaining 1-0 in favour of the away team.
The second period of the game started off with similar action as the last half of the first period. Although, halfway through the second, the Warriors scored their second of the game. Paige Rynne got her second of the game which brought her team up to 2-0.
It wasn't long after this goal when the Mustangs responded back. A goal by Kate Suitor from Kylie Logan put the Mustangs on the board and tightened the Warriors lead in the game. This was Suitor's first OUA goal.
After this goal, the Mustangs felt the positive energy and starting applying immense pressure to the Warriors team.
As the Warriors started playing a more physical game, they began to take many penalties. The Mustangs had a five on three chance but could not capitalize on it.
Shortly after those two penalties were killed off by the Warriors, they got an extremely lucky goal by Carly Orth, which brought the score to 3-1 with five minutes left in the second.
As the Warriors played off of this momentum, they generated another score worthy chance which Mustangs goalie, Brooke Vaccari, shut down with an amazing save for her team.
Head Coach Candice Moxely discusses Vaccari's play, "She has big save capabilities. To have a first-year goalie come in and be able to make saves like that at this level and with these levels of shooters, it was pretty exciting for us."
Although, this didn't intimidate the Warriors, as they got their fourth goal of the game. Madison Pritchard increased her teams lead, ending the second period 4-1.
The third period of the game starts off with a goal less than a minute from the Warriors, immediately increasing their lead to 5-1.
Halfway through the period, Emma Thomas, from the Mustangs, scored an amazing goal from the point. Her slapshot easily got through Warriors goalie, Kara Mark, which brought the Mustangs up. The score was now 5-2.
The last period came to an end with no further goals. The final score read 5-2 for the Warriors.
Moxely speaks on the overall game, "Waterloo plays a pretty physical game so I thought our players matched and exceeded that at times. It was good to see that fire come from our players and team. They're an offensively skilled team and there were a few breakdowns and not the results we wanted. Definitely saw some things out of our squad this weekend that we hadn't seen all season so we were excited about that."
