London, ON – The Mustangs conclude their final home game of 2024 with a 3-0 victory over the TMU Bold.
Reflecting on yesterday's loss to the York Lions and tonight's win in their final home game of 2024, Head Coach Candice Moxley said, "We capitalized on our opportunities tonight. I think we showed better awareness in the offensive zone, demonstrating patience with the puck and stepping into spaces to create chances and hit the net effectively."
The first period, the Mustangs came out strong, playing offensively and doing a great job controlling the puck in the TMU zone. They had some great slot shots but couldn't find the back of the net early on.
Thirteen minutes into the first period, TMU got a penalty call on Emily Baxter for tripping. The Mustangs capitalized on the advantage as Leah Barnard netted the first goal of the weekend, assisted by Emma Campbell.
Western held a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period.
The second period started off with both teams playing offensively. Just nine minutes into the period, Maddy Rai put the puck in the net and extended the lead for Western. The goal was particularly special, as it marked her first-ever OUA game and her first OUA goal.
Western got a penalty call for head contact on Kennedy Ward at 13:28. However, the Mustangs played defensively, and TMU didn't get the chance to get on the scoreboard.
The third period, TMU had a few great shots at the beginning of the third period, but they couldn't break through. Mustangs' goaltender Presley Daschuk, playing in her first OUA game tonight, delivered an outstanding performance with several huge saves to stop TMU goal.
"I got the text this morning that I was going to be playing. Obviously, there were a lot of emotions—nerves, excitement—but I have awesome teammates and an amazing family. Everyone was super supportive and excited to see me play, so it was a big confidence boost. I couldn't have done it without my team." said Presley Daschuk.
With one minute remaining of the game, Alyssa Wouda sealed the win for Western with an empty-net goal, assisted by Gabrielle Lehoux.
The Mustangs concluded their final 2024 home game with a 3-0 victory and are eager to extend the momentum on the road next weekend.
"It's fun to be on the road. We don't have as many distractions as we do at home, so it's a great opportunity to spend time together. We get to know each other a little more, which is always valuable." Head Coach Candice Moxley noted.
