Toronto, ON – The Mustangs hit the road this weekend and faced the Toronto Varsity Blues for the first time this season. After three periods of intense action, the game concluded with a 3-1 victory for Western.
The first period, Western started the game fast paced and playing aggressively on offense. Less than three minutes into the game, Haylie Kirkpatrick scored a goal for the Mustangs, marking their second shot and giving Western an early lead.
The period concluded with the Mustangs leading 1-0 over the Varsity Blues.
Five minutes into the second period, the Varsity Blues finally had their first shot of the period, but Mustangs goalie Presley Daschuk made a big save, keeping Toronto off the scoreboard.
With nine minutes remaining in the period, the puck bounced near the net, giving Toronto a good scoring opportunity. However, Daschuk made another significant save, using her glove to stop the puck.
At 14:40, Western took their first penalty of the game for interference, giving UofT their first power play. The Varsity Blues had a few good chances but couldn't capitalize on the man advantage.
With just one second remaining in the period, Madelaine DesRosier made a great pass to Haylie Kirkpatrick in front of the net giving her an open scoring chance and she capitalized, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame with her second goal of the night.
The third period, the Mustangs and the Varsity Blues played well and fought hard.
Five minutes into the period, Toronto finally scored their first goal of the game, with Christina Alexiou finding the back of the net.
At 19:53, Elizabeth Gauthier from the Mustangs solidified the victory with an empty-net goal. The goal was assisted by Madelaine DesRosier and Emma Campbell.
The third period came to an end as the Mustangs took the game successfully, 3-1.
