Button drops 30 points against former Marauders despite loss

The Mustangs took on the McMaster Marauders in their 2024-25 season home opener on Friday evening.

The Mustangs came quickly out of the gates, with Emily Capretta knocking down a 3 to open their account. Both teams played with great pace throughout the quarter. McMaster led after the first quarter 23-21.

McMaster built a lead in the 2nd quarter, shooting 41% from the field compared to the Mustangs 28%. They also shared the ball more on offense, passing out 14 assists. Jenna Button and Emily Capretta kept the Mustangs in the hunt. Button went into the half with 9 points and 3 rebounds, while Capretta had 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. The Marauders led 43-38 at the break.

McMaster continued to build on their lead in the third quarter. They led 68-58 going into the fourth quarter.

Button put the Mustangs on her back and continued to lead the charge. She drained 6 threes, including a four-point play, on her way to 30 points and 5 rebounds for the night! Kailey Reimer also contributed on both ends of the floor, finishing the night with 12 points and 9 rebounds. McMaster outscored the Mustangs by in the fourth quarter to close out the game 94-76.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Nate McKibbon remained positive on the fact that the Mustangs managed to force 23 turnovers and 15 steals against the steel-trapped Marauders. "We made adjustments out of a defense. We forced some turnovers against a team that doesn't turn the ball over much. We did a good job of making them uncomfortable at times, I think our transition defense let us down at times. The new defense worked, we just need to find a way to make sure we get back and get set", McKibbon said.

The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday, November 9th at 6pm EST against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
