LONDON, ON
On Saturday evening, the Mustangs continued their home stretch against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
Western got out and running early, Emily Capretta putting them on the board with a three. Western shot well from the field, going 11-20 from the field and 4-6 from the 3 point line. Six Mustangs got on the score sheet in the first quarter, Sarah Harvey led the charge with 8 points. Western built a comfortable lead 30-16 after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams slow things down. The Mustangs offense dried up, but they still maintained a healthy lead of 45-34 going into the break. Paris Alexander got going in the second quarter, leading the Mustangs with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
The third quarter was much the same as it was in the second. Western continued to maintain their lead, comfortably hovering around 10 points. Both teams continued to grind on the defensive end of the floor, the Mustangs forcing 13 turnovers and the Thunderwolves pulling down 15 defensive rebounds. They went into the final frame leading by 9, 54-45.Â
In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs extended their lead to as much as 19 points. They closed out the game 70-51, securing their first win at home.Â
"It felt pretty good [winning at home]. There were a good amount of people in the stands, and they brought a lot of energy. Overall it was a great game and we shared the ball well. I'm really happy that we won", said Alexander. She finished the night with a team-high 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
Coach McKibbon was proud of the defensive effort the Mustangs showed. "We just got back to our habits and some of the stuff we've been working on since day 1. I think it was more so just re-establishing what we want to be defensively", said McKibbon.Â
Avarie Thomas returned to the lineup after missing the game against the Marauders and she had an immediate impact. She pulled down 6 rebounds and had a team-high 5 steals.Â
"She's incredible! She's an all-Canadian soccer player at the defensive position. She uses all her strength, athleticism and aggression on defense and it translates in both sports", said McKibbon.Â
Western takes on the TMU Bold in Toronto on Wednesday, November 13th at 6pm EST. Tune in live on OUA.tv.
