Box Score London ON - The undefeated Western Mustangs welcomed the McMaster Marauders to Alumni Field this afternoon. The team came out on top, beating the Marauders 1-0.
McMaster started the game off in control of the play. They was pressing hard, making great runs, and finding one another on the wings.
As the first half went on, the Mustangs began getting great opportunities on net and were maintaining possession of the ball. Forward Jackie Brown was delivering great passes into the box, giving her teammates excellent opportunities to find the back of the net.
Western capitalized thirty-one minutes into the game. Mara Sanauceanu found the rebound and gave the Mustangs the lead after a cross by Mackenzie Bilotta hit off the post.
The goal gave Western a lot of momentum as they finished the first half very strongly.
The second half was more even in terms of possession and control of play. Both teams had good opportunities on net and created excellent passing sequences.
Mustangs goaltender Samantha St. Croix shined in the second half, making incredible saves to keep her team ahead. Westerns Head Coach Onkar Dhillon said, "Samantha is our rock in the back. She is one of the best goalkeepers in the country. She's there in the key moments, she steps up, but she also knows how to calm our back line down when necessary."
Although it was an extremely hot day, the tempo of the game remained high through the full 90 minutes.
"We stuck to our principles, played the ball to feet, and played confidently," said Westerns goal scorer Mara Sanauceanu. "It was hot, but we stuck with it and ran that extra mile. We wanted to leave everything on the field, and I think we showed that today."
The Mustangs will look to continue their hot streak on Friday (September 20) when they travel to Windsor to take on the Lancers. Kickoff will be at 6:00 PM.
