WATERLOO, ON -
Friday evening, the Mustangs stayed in Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. They came out looking much like their old selves to start the game. Defensively, they pressed the Golden Hawks, who struggled to keep possession of the ball. Western scored 11 points off 10 turnovers on Laurier, and led 19-10 after the first quarter.
Western continued to push the pace on the Golden Hawks, forcing turnovers and running the floor. Offensively, they made shots all-around, something they've struggled with in the past couple games. Jenna Button led the Mustangs with 11 points at the half.
In the third quarter, the Golden Hawks fought their way back in the game. Button continued to drive the ball and shoot well from the field. She had 10 points in the quarter. Avarie Thomas, who's been a defensive stalwart for the Mustangs, showed off her offensive skills. She went 3-3 from beyond the arc, adding to her 12 points and 8 rebounds. Western led 55-47 heading into the final frame.
Laurier came back in the fourth quarter and even took a brief lead. The game came down to the wire, with Thomas and Button leading the way for the Mustangs. Button finished with 27 points, including 5 threes, and Thomas notched 4 threes, including the game winner. The Mustangs held on to win 68-65.
The Mustangs continue on their road trip against the Windsor Lancers at 6PM EST on Wednesday, February 5th. Tune in OUA.tv.
