Waterloo, ON – In Mustangs' first game back on the road, they pulled off one of their one of most dramatic wins of the season, defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 7-6 in overtime on Thursday night.
The game started fast, just 30 seconds in, both teams took penalties, immediately setting up a four-on-four play. Only 26 seconds later, Western struck first. Christiano Aiello opened the scoring at 0:56, assisted from Jacob Dietz to give the Mustangs a early1-0 lead.
Laurier tied the game 5:15 into the period on a power play, but Western responded by at 13:36, as Zander Veccia scored his seventh of the season, assisted from Shane Bulitka and Eric Van Impe.
Just over a minute later at 14:41, Dietz added another to the momentum, finishing a pass from Aiello and Nicholas Yearwood to extend the lead to 3-1.
The first period ended with Western ahead and outshooting Laurier 20-12.
Laurier cut the lead to 3-2 early in the second, but the Mustangs held strong. At 14:15, Veccia struck again, his second goal of the night, assist pass from Lawson Sherk, restoring the two-point lead.
Less than a minute later, Zach Power extended the lead to 5-2 assisted by Van Impe and Aiello.
Western opened the final period with another quick goal, 14 seconds into the period, Sherk scored another one for the Mustangs, from Veccia and Bulitka, stretching the lead to 6-2.
Laurier stormed back with four straight goals, tying the game 6–6 with 2:20 remaining in the game.
The Mustangs held on through a wave of late pressure, killing off several penalties in the period.
At 6:53 of OT, Eric Van Impe finished a setup from Aiello and Power to give Western a much-needed extra point and made it to 7-6 and sealed the victory.
The Mustangs are back on the road Friday, November 28, for a 6:00 p.m. matchup against the Brock Badgers.
