London, ON - The Mustangs picked up a 5-4 win over McGill in what turned out to be an OUA record length 13 round shootout on Sunday afternoon.
Within the first three minutes of the first period, there was pressure from both teams to gain puck possession - the Mustangs were fighting especially hard to gain puck possession and score the first goal after their loss against Trois-Rivières Patroites the day before. McGill was able to capitalize on a scramble in front of the net and open up scoring for the game, after the first 10 minutes. McGill was able to get their second goal of the game with four minutes left of the first period. With less than two minutes left, Eric Van Impe was able to score the Mustangs first goal, with the assist from Franco Sproviero and Andrew Bruder.
The period ended with the Mustangs in a one goal deficit against McGill.Â
When the second period started, the Mustangs immediately created opportunities for goals in McGills defensive zone. However, an unfortunate penalty received by the Mustangs meant that McGill had a powerplay opportunity which allowed them to score their third goal of the game. However, at 7:45, centre Zach Power, assisted by Owen MacNeil was able to get one past the McGill goaltender, bringing the score to 3-2.
The one goal deficit was short lived however, as three minutes later McGill was able to get their fourth goal of the game. Andrew Bruder tightened the gap with a rush from the Mustangs defensive zone and a pass in front of the net resulting in a goal. His goal was assisted by Jack Sander and Jacob Santerre.Â
The third period was a fight between McGill and the Mustangs for puck possession, with both teams becoming more physical and aggressive, resulting in penalties. Goaltender Jack McNaughton was on his toes and blocking shot after shot from McGill in an intense scramble in front of the net. In an interview after the game he stated that "the team did a good job keeping to the outside and keeping up the pressure so they couldn't get too many great opportunities".  With than one minute left of the game as a last ditch effort, Jacob Santerre tied it up for the Mustangs with assists from Andrew Bruder and Eric Van Impe, pushing the game into a three on three overtime.
   Â
The Mustangs played phenomenally in the seven minute 3-on-3 overtime period, giving themselves multiple attempts in McGills defensive zone, however, they were not able to score, pushing the game into a shootout. The team went through over 12 rounds of shootouts, with neither team being successful until Jacob Dietz in round 13 was able to get one past the goalie and win the game for the Mustangs. Head Coach Clarke Singer stated that he is "very proud of the team for coming out and playing the way that they did and playing for each other".
