Windsor, ON – The Mustangs were well represented at the 2025 U SPORTS Track & Field awards ahead of the Championship on Thursday morning.
A trio of Mustangs received awards, including Favour Okpali as Outstanding Track Athlete of the Season, Kenneth West as Outstanding Field Athlete of the Season & Aaron Thompson as the Men's Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner.
Okpali is the top-ranked U SPORTS athlete in the 600m and third in the 300m. She broke her own OUA 600m record, lowering it from 1:29.19 to an impressive 1:27.35, just .20 off of the Canadian Record.
"It means a lot to me." said Okpali "Last year I wasn't even nominated for anything and now I won the OUA Athlete of the Year, and now this, it's such an honor and it's crazy that like the U SPORTS committee even considered me for this award and now they're giving it to me. I'm so honored and grateful."
West enters U SPORTS as the top ranked athlete in the country in both the long jump and triple jump. West set an OUA record at the provincial championship just two weeks ago when he leapt 7.99m. Add to that, triple jumped 15.89m, breaking the meet record and moving himself to the top of the U SPORTS rankings at the Windsor Team Challenge this season.
"This makes me even more grateful that it recognizes how great our team is and to see the successes that we've already accomplished," said West of the win. "It increases that gratitude and fuels me even more to go out there and do my best this weekend."
Thompson is enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine program while also serving as the Mustangs Mental Wellness Lead, Coaching junior Track and Field athletes with the London Western Track and Field, while also conducting ongoing research.
"2 years ago, when I was at Waterloo, I got the OUA award but not the U SPORTS one. So it's my first time getting the U Sports Award, which is obviously a massive honor and I'm super thankful for it." said Thompson "I don't do the things in order to get recognition, but it's still very nice and it means a lot. I'm super honored to get this award and super blessed to be able to do the things that I do for the community."
