LONDON, ON – The Western Mustangs men's basketball team made a statement in their home opener on Friday night, defeating the Waterloo Warriors 83-62 at Thompson Arena. Following an explosive opening quarter and a tightly contested first half, the Mustangs delivered a dominant second-half performance, combining relentless defensive pressure with efficient scoring to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Western wasted no time setting the tone, as Lucas Sheets opened the scoring just seven seconds into the contest off an assist from Milan John. The Mustangs quickly established a 6-0 advantage, using strong ball movement and aggressive drives to the basket to put Waterloo on its heels. John continued to lead the early offensive charge, knocking down a deep three-pointer midway through the quarter to extend Western's lead to 15-6 and force the Warriors into their first timeout. Owen Urquhart provided an immediate spark off the bench, scoring six points in the opening frame, while John added nine. Western's defensive intensity was equally impressive, holding Waterloo to just nine points on 20% shooting to close the first quarter with a commanding 25-9 advantage.
The Warriors responded in the second quarter, finding their offensive rhythm and gradually chipping away at Western's lead. Waterloo's Stefan Prica caught fire from beyond the arc, connecting on multiple three-pointers as the visitors mounted a determined comeback. After seeing their 16-point advantage reduced to just one, the Mustangs turned to Urquhart and Andres Garcia for timely offensive contributions. Garcia converted a crucial three-point play with 2:48 remaining, while Tye Cotie added an and-one of his own in the final minute. However, Prica answered with back-to-back three-pointers in the closing moments, bringing Waterloo within striking distance. Despite being outscored 27-14 in the quarter, Western entered halftime holding a narrow 39-36 lead.
Reflecting on his team's first-half performance, Western head coach Brad Campbell acknowledged the contrast between the Mustangs' strong opening and their second-quarter struggles.
"We started off extremely well in the first quarter," said Campbell. "The second quarter, all kinds of mental lapses. We had a very rough quarter."
The third quarter proved to be the turning point, as Western emerged from halftime with renewed defensive intensity and a more decisive offensive approach. Waterloo briefly tied the contest at 41-41 following a three-pointer from Isaiah McRae, but Garcia immediately answered with a three of his own to restore the Mustangs' advantage. From there, Western began to take control. Emmanuel Akot and Sheets contributed important baskets before Urquhart scored on consecutive possessions, pushing the lead into double digits. Joe Baggaley-Lacerte added a three-pointer to extend the advantage to 55-41, while Garcia responded to a four-point play from McRae with another three-pointer to keep Western firmly in front. Cotie continued to make his presence felt around the basket, scoring twice in the closing minutes, including a tough finish through contact. The Mustangs outscored Waterloo 24-10 in the quarter, carrying a 63-46 lead into the final frame.
Campbell credited his team's defensive commitment and execution for the decisive turnaround.
"Super active, following the game plan. Just all kinds of great activity in the second half defensively," said Campbell.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Mustangs carried their strong play into the fourth quarter. Imisi Motunde opened the frame with a three-pointer off an assist from John, immediately extending Western's lead to 20 points. The Mustangs continued to capitalize on defensive stops and effective ball movement, with John, Sheets and Urquhart all contributing baskets as the advantage steadily grew. Garcia capped off his outstanding shooting performance with another three-pointer, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. A layup from Loic Mimche with 2:48 remaining gave Western its largest lead of the night at 81-54, a 27-point advantage. The Mustangs maintained control down the stretch, securing an emphatic 83-62 victory in front of their home crowd.
Campbell highlighted how Western's defensive stops created opportunities for the team to find its offensive rhythm.
"We got stops, and then we started to push the ball in transition," said Campbell. "A few transition threes, a few layups. We had some good half-court ball-screen action, scored with a lot of our roll men on some short-roll opportunities, but just started converting offensively after a lot of stops."
Garcia led the Mustangs with 16 points, shooting an efficient 6-for-9 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range. Following the game, he emphasized the trust and unselfishness within the team as key factors behind his offensive success.
"We have great players around me, so I just gotta pick my spots and know that we have an unselfish team," said Garcia. "They'll give up a good shot for a great shot. Trust my teammates, know that the ball's gonna come back to me."
Urquhart was another standout performer, providing a major boost off the bench with 14 points and five rebounds. His contributions were particularly valuable during Western's third-quarter surge, helping the Mustangs rebuild their lead after Waterloo's first-half comeback. Cotie also delivered an impressive all-around performance, recording nine points, eight rebounds and five assists. His energy on the glass and ability to create opportunities for teammates played an important role in Western's offensive success.
As a team, Western shot 52.9% from the field, scored 46 points in the paint and received 28 points from its bench. The Mustangs also outrebounded Waterloo 35-24 and committed just seven turnovers, showcasing their efficiency and discipline on both ends of the floor.
The victory marked an impressive start to Western's home campaign, with the Mustangs demonstrating their depth, resilience and ability to respond under pressure. After weathering Waterloo's second-quarter comeback, Western's dominant second-half performance provided plenty of encouragement as the team looks to build on its undefeated start to the season.
